We arrived at Lake Natron late in the afternoon having been delayed by the needed car repair so I was not able to conduct interviews of the district officials. We stopped at several hotels but decided $100 per person per night was out of our price range. Our only alternative was to rough it.
So that's how we came to camp in Africa. The tent rental was $10 with another $10 per person. We paid extra to have dinner and lunch prepared for us. Dinner was served on a table with a tablecloth, real silverware and plates under the stars. Brad went to bed early while I sat up and watched a movie on my computer under the stars while bats flew around me picking off all the mosquitoes and other bugs.
Sleeping on the ground wasn't too bad since they provided us with mattresses. We awoke to bright sunny day and the shock of cold shower. What a way to wake up!
We broke camp and moved on. Due to some bureaucratic mix up the Game Official was not willing to appear on camera for an interview. He was very enthusiastic about what we were trying to do and invited us to come back once we had the permission of his superiors. So once again we moved on without the interview we so wanted to get. On to Waso!
